Prioritisation tool

The following guide is to assist in identifying areas to focus remediation efforts. Here, you will be able weight different values (e.g., potential gains per barrier, stream order, focal species) to help select catchments or subcathments for targgeted remediation.

  1. Select the region of interest in the Map options tab.
  • This will populate the “Prioritisatoin Region” tab in the bottom left panel and the main map with the different catchments.
  • To view the range of catchment connectivities, you can then adjust the slide bar to the desired connectivity.
  1. Here you can then select different values and weigths (-1 to 10) for each value.
  • This defaults to the value per barrier (number of barriers need to reach the maximum potential of the catchment) and stream order. If you do not want to use these factors in your prioritisation, simply select weight as zero in the dropdown list.
  1. At this point you can hover over a point and identify the catchment of interest in the “Prioritisaton Region” figure and then select that catchment in step 2 of the “Map Options -> Catchement” dropdown list.
  • If no subcatchments are present in the catchment (stream order <= 5), this will populate the main map with with the river and potential barriers for remedidation.
  1. If subcatchments are present in the catchment, the “Prioritisatoin Subcatchment” tab will populate with inforamtion on the best subcatchment to focus remediation efforts.
  • like the Prioritisaton Region tab, you can also weight different factors to help select a subcatchemnt to focus on.

Welcome to NZ Barrier Assessment and Reporting Tool

NIWA has calclulated a connectivity score for all catchments across the entire New Zealand river network. This interactive webtool allows you to map and interrogate these estimates on a simplified representation of the river network.

Click on the Map options tab to assess the riverscape connectivity across a region or select the environmental reporting tab to generate an environmental report for the regional fish passage action plan.
